Births in the United States, 2018
This report presents selected highlights from 2018 final birth data on key demographic, health care utilization, and infant health indicators. General fertility rates (the number of births per 1,000 women aged 15–44) and teen birth rates are presented. Also shown are the distribution of births with a previous cesarean delivery (vaginal births after previous cesarean [VBAC] and repeat cesarean delivery) and the distribution of births by gestational age.
Receipt of Pelvic Examinations Among Women Aged 15–44 in the United States, 1988–2017
Pelvic examination has been commonly performed as part of a physical examination for women in the United States. However, the value of routine pelvic examinations has been questioned recently. Using National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) data through 2017 for women aged 15–44, this report describes trends overall and by age since 1988 in the receipt of pelvic examinations in the past year, and differences by Hispanic origin and race, education, poverty status, and health insurance status for 2015–2017.
Sneathia amnii and Maternal Chorioamnionitis and Stillbirth, Mozambique
This article reports a case of Sneathia amnii as the causative agent of maternal chorioamnionitis and congenital pneumonia resulting in a late fetal death in Mozambique, with strong supportive postmortem molecular and histopathologic confirmation. This rare, fastidious gram-negative coccobacillus has been reported to infrequently cause abortions, stillbirths, and neonatal infections.
Geographic Co-Occurrence of Mesothelioma and Ovarian Cancer Incidence
Asbestos is an established cause of several cancers, including mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. Incidence of mesothelioma, the sentinel asbestos-associated cancer, varies by state, likely reflecting different levels of asbestos exposure. We hypothesized that states with high mesothelioma incidence may also have high ovarian cancer incidence.
