Study Shows Flu Vaccine Reduced Risk of Severe Flu Illness

A new CDC-supported study published in Vaccine conducted over multiple influenza flu seasons shows that getting a flu shot lessened the risk of severe influenza among adults. The study also looked at the question of whether a flu vaccine reduces illness severity in people who get vaccinated and still get sick and found that, yes, flu vaccination did reduce severity and duration of flu illness.

​The 1918 pandemic flu partner webinar commemorated 100 years since the 1918 flu pandemic. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at CDC, and Dr. Daniel Jernigan, Director of the Influenza Division at CDC, highlighted achievements over the past century and identified opportunities for improvement in responding to flu.
