Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published “Increase in Incidence of Congenital Syphilis — United States, 2012–2014,” in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The analysis shows that after years of decline, the number of congenital syphilis cases reported in the United States increased between 2012 and 2014. More information about the report and ways to prevent this needless tragedy can be found in a Dear Colleague Letter from Dr. Gail Bolan, Director of the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. The annual STD Surveillance Report was released this afternoon. Data in Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2014, show that cases of all three nationally notifiable sexually transmitted diseases—chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis —have increased for the first time since 2006.
