Dr. Jason G. Newland on Antibiotic Stewardship: Using Evidence-Based Safe Prescribing Practices
As the medical director of patient safety and systems reliability at Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics in Kansas City, MO, Dr. Jason G. Newland knows that antibiotic resistance is one of the nation’s most pressing public health threats. He also knows that improving antibiotic use and prescribing practices—reducing the more than 262 million courses of antibiotics prescribed each year in outpatient settings, increasing use of confirmatory lab tests, and reducing antibiotic-associated side effects like C. difficile—is the first line of defense against the spread and development of drug-resistant germs. But, with patient satisfaction concerns and time constraints, he knows it is often easier said than done.
