Weekly Influenza Surveillance

Flu activity is still elevated in the United States but is declining. It is possible, however, that flu activity will continue for several weeks in parts of the country.

While H3N2 viruses predominated earlier in the season, influenza B viruses have been more common in recent weeks. This season has been severe for people 65 years and older, with very high hospitalization rates being recorded.

Influenza antiviral drugs can treat flu illness. CDC recommends these drugs be used to treat people who are very sick or who are at high risk of serious flu-related complications who have flu symptoms. Early antiviral treatment works best.

American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to die from pneumonia and flu than other races. The estimated number of influenza-associated illnesses prevented by flu vaccination during the 2013-14 season: 7.2 MILLION enough people to form a line from Maine to Oregon.

Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) Outbreak in Chicago Area

April 8, 2015 — CDC is aware of reports of a canine influenza (dog flu) outbreak in the Chicago area. Dog flu is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs that does not cause illness in humans. A vaccine against this disease in dogs has been available since 2009. CDC recommends that people concerned about dog flu speak to their veterinarian.

Avian Influenza: Information for Health Professionals and Laboratorians

CDC is currently updating some avian influenza guidance documents. Where only avian H7N9 guidance is available, it is appropriate to use avian H7N9 guidance to address other avian influenza infections in people.
