STDs in Space? by William C. Miller, MD, PhD, MPH
Most of us appreciate the simple elegance of maps of STD cases or incidence rates. Maps are a straightforward surveillance tool, helping us to identify areas with the greatest disease burden. But can maps and related spatial methods do more for us? Can these tools provide insights into the underlying epidemiology of STDs and provide guidance for intervention? And are they really so simple, or can we sometimes mislead ourselves? William C. Miller, MD, PhD, MPH, is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief for the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases. He previously served as an Associate Editor for Sexually Transmitted Infections and is Special Editor for Infectious Diseases for EPIDEMIOLOGY. For the past 20 years, Dr. Miller has conducted a wide range of STD and HIV epidemiological, clinical, and prevention research in the U.S. and internationally. His spatial work is done in collaboration with a group of UNC researchers with expertise in spatial statistics and geostatistics. Currently, he leads a study of acute HIV infection and partner services in STD clinics in Malawi and is protocol chair for HPTN 074, a study of HIV treatment as prevention among people who inject drugs.
