The Road From Observation to Intervention to Implementation: Perspectives of a Pragmatic HIV Prevention Researcher
by Connie Celum, MD, MPH

Connie Celum, MD, MPH

In this webinar, Dr. Celum will describe lessons learned in moving from observational epidemiology of STIs and HIV interaction with a focus on HSV-2 to testing interventions to reduce HIV acquisition and transmission. She will describe current work on combination HIV prevention to achieve high coverage of HIV testing and linkages to effective interventions (HIV treatment and male circumcision) in subSaharan Africa.

Dr. Celum is an infectious diseases epidemiologist, with research interests focusing on HIV prevention trials to find effective strategies to reduce HIV acquisition and transmission. Dr. Celum was the Principal Investigator of efficacy trials of herpes suppression for prevention of HIV acquisition (HPTN 039), herpes suppression for HIV transmission and disease progression (Partners in Prevention HSV/HIV Transmission Study and HPTN 039) in the US, Peru, and Africa. She is the Principal Investigator of the Partners PrEP Study of pre-exposure antiretroviral prophylaxis among HIV serodiscordant couples in Kenya and Uganda. She is the Principal Investigator of combination HIV prevention studies to achieve high coverage of knowledge of HIV serostatus through home-based HIV testing, with linkages to HIV care and evidence-based HIV prevention interventions (e.g., medical male circumcision) in South Africa and Uganda.
