HIV Risk, Prevention, and Testing Behaviors Among Men Who Have Sex With Men — National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System, 21 U.S. Cities, United States, 2008

More than half of the 1.1 million persons in the United States living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are men who have sex with men (MSM). This report summarizes data gathered from 8,175 MSM by the 2008 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System. Unprotected anal intercourse with a male partner was reported by 54% of the participants; 37% reported having unprotected anal sex with a main male partner, and 25% reported having unprotected anal sex with a casual
male partner . Noninjection drug use during the past 12 months was reported by 46% of participants. Of the participants surveyed, 90% had been tested for HIV during their lifetime, 62% had been tested during the past 12 months, 51% had received a hepatitis vaccination, 35% had been tested for syphilis during the past 12 months, and 18% had participated in an individual- or group-level HIV behavioral intervention.
