Vital Signs: Nonfatal, Motor Vehicle–Occupant Injuries (2009) and Seat

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the United States among persons aged 5–34 years, and seat belts have been shown to be the most effective method for reducing injuries among adults in the event of a crash. For this report, CDC analyzed 2009 data on the number and rate of nonfatal, motor vehicle–occupant injuries and 2008 data on the prevalence of self-reported seat belt use among adults in the United States.
