Title: CDC Registry (IIS): CVX - Vaccines Administered (HL7 Standard Code Set) Update

You are subscribed to Registry (IIS): CVX - Vaccines Administered (HL7 Standard Code Set) for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This information has recently been updated and is now available.

The CVX table is being updated to address two recent issues.  The first is to clarify what to call a vaccine when the specific formulation is not known. This often occurs when a historical paper immunization record is entered into an Immunization Information System (IIS). In the past, these were labeled Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). However, this does not accurately reflect the situation. NOS really means a vaccine not in the list of existing codes. With historical records, the vaccine could in fact be assigned a code if more information were known. To more accurately reflect this situation, we have renamed all the NOS vaccines “unspecified formulation.” For example, HIB, NOS is now named HIB, unspecified formulation.

The second change is in response to the recently published business rules for CVX creation. Several users have identified a missing CVX code. The business rules state that vaccines that are preservative-free are to be coded separately from similar vaccines that are not preservative-free. Previously, injectable seasonal flu vaccines all used the same CVX, regardless of preservative status. The old code has now been retired. New CVX codes have been added to allow separation of flu vaccines into separate codes, depending on preservative status. These codes should be used for immunizations administered after October 1, 2010. Old immunization records do not need to be updated.
