CDC.gov Features deliver actionable and timely health, safety and wellness messages.  Here is a preview of the CDC.gov Health and Safety features of the week:

Celebrate National DNA Day on April 23rd ~ National DNA Day is a special day when teachers, students, and the public can learn more about genetics and genomics. This year, DNA Day will be celebrated on Friday, April 23rd. On this day and throughout April, researchers from across the country will visit dozens of high schools to talk with students and answer questions about genetics.

Climate Change and Health ~ Essential public health services are key to preventing injuries and illnesses, enhancing public health preparedness, and reducing the risk from climate change. Many scientists and experts are studying how global climate change will affect the environment. Efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are focused on addressing how environmental changes can affect people's health.

Counting Malaria Out: Can We Do It? ~ April 25 is World Malaria Day, commemorating the date in 2000 when 44 African leaders committed to cutting malaria deaths. Each year, malaria causes approximately 1 million deaths, most in young children in Africa. Recent increases in resources are beginning to result in successes in the fight against this disease.

Detect Autism Early ~ We naturally think of height and weight, but from birth to 5 years, your child should reach milestones in how he plays, learns, speaks and acts. A delay in any of these areas could be a sign of a developmental problem, even autism. The good news is, the earlier it's recognized the more you can do to help your child reach her full potential.

Heard about How to Prevent Meningococcal Disease? ~ Meningococcal disease is a serious, vaccine-preventable infection. The meningococcal conjugate vaccine is recommended for all 11-18 year olds. Kids should get this vaccine at their 11-12 year old check-up with other preventive services. Kids 13-18 years old who haven’t gotten the vaccine can get it any time.

National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program ~ CDC supports Comprehensive Cancer Control—a collaborative process through which a community and its partners pool resources to reduce cancer risk, find cancer earlier, improve access to quality treatment, and improve survivors' quality of life.

What You Should Know about Alcohol and Pregnancy ~ CDC urges pregnant women not to drink alcohol any time during pregnancy. There is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant. There is also no safe time during pregnancy to drink and no safe kind of alcohol.

CDC.gov feature articles are written by subject matter experts and health communicators, then edited to emphasize strong call-to-action messages and friendly, meaningful visuals. While most features are topic- or event-driven, some capture the full scope of CDC's work on cross-cutting topics such as staying healthy and safe over the holidays, sending kids back to school, or CDC's global programs and outreach. CDC Features may be syndicated to other Web sites at no cost. Learn more about Content Syndication
