Cervical Cancer: The Preventable Gynecologic Cancer ~ All women are at risk for cervical cancer. It occurs most often in women over age 30. Cervical cancer is highly preventable because screening tests (such as the Pap test) and vaccines to prevent HPV infections are available. When cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable and associated with long survival and good quality of life.

February is American Heart Month ~ Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2009, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 will have a recurrent attack. Learn about heart disease prevention.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness ~ February 7th marks the tenth annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD); a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative designed to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment among Blacks in the United States. The theme for NBHAAD 2010 is "HIV/AIDS Prevention: A Choice and a Lifestyle.” Educate yourself, friends, and family about HIV/AIDS and what you can do to protect yourself.

Wear Red for Heart Disease Awareness ~ Wear red the first Friday of February each year to help raise awareness about heart disease.  Heart disease is the number one killer of women. A woman’s risk for heart disease rises between the ages of 40 and 60, but heart disease can begin early, even in the teen years. No matter how old you are, you can take steps to lower your risk!
