Guidelines for Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in HIV-Infected Adults and Adolescents
Recommendations from CDC, the National Institutes of Health, and the HIV Medicine Association
of the Infectious Diseases Society of America
The widespread use of antiretroviral therapy has helped reduce deaths caused by opportunistic illnesses (OIs) (i.e., infections that are more frequent or severe in HIV-infected persons). However, OIs continue to cause considerable morbidity and mortality for several reasons,
such as persons being unaware of their HIV
infection or delay in seeking treatment for HIV.
This report updates guidelines for the prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections in adults (persons aged >18 years) and adolescents
(persons aged 13--17 years).
