-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PACKAGE : linuxconf SUMMARY : Open relay in mailconf module DATE : 2002-11-06 17:05:00 ID : CLA-2002:544 RELEVANT RELEASES : 6.0, 7.0, 8 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Linuxconf is an administration system which is divided in several modules. The mailconf module is responsible for the sendmail configuration. There is a problem[1] in the sendmail.cf file generated by the mailconf module that allows sendmail to be used as an open relay. By exploiting this vulnerability, a malicious user could send SPAM through the sendmail server without being in its served network. In order to do that, the recipient address of the messages must be in the format "user%domain@". Please note that the default sendmail.cf file distributed with our sendmail package is not vulnerable to this open relay problem. Only users who have generated the sendmail.cf file using linuxconf are. For information about mail relay and why it should be configurated properly, please consult the "Open Relay Database FAQ" [2]. SOLUTION All users of the linuxconf-mailconf module should upgrade. IMPORTANT: after the update, it is necessary to regenerate the sendmail.cf and the sendmail service must be restarted. In order to do that, use the option "Generate /etc/mail/sendmail.cf" from mailconf and run the command "service sendmail restart" (as root), if it was already running.
