-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PACKAGE : ypserv SUMMARY : Ypserv memory leak DATE : 2002-10-30 12:06:00 ID : CLA-2002:539 RELEVANT RELEASES : 6.0, 7.0, 8 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION "ypserv"[1] is an implementation of the Network Information System (NIS) which is used to centralize user information as well as authentication. Thorsten Kukuk identified and fixed a memory leak vulnerability[2] in the ypserv daemon. Requests for non-existing maps would cause the ypserv daemon to consume more and more memory. An attacker in the local network could flood the service with such requests until the memory is exhausted, characterizing a DoS condition. SOLUTION All ypserv packages should upgrade their packages. IMPORTANT: the ypserv service must be manually restarted after the upgrade if it was already running, otherwise the vulnerability will not be closed. To do so, run as root: service ypserv restart REFERENCES 1. http://www.linux-nis.org/nis/ypserv/index.html 2. http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-1232 3. http://www.linux-nis.org/nis/ypserv/NEWS DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINKS TO THE UPDATED PACKAGES ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/6.0/SRPMS/ypserv-1.3.11-4U60_1cl.src.rpm ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/6.0/RPMS/ypserv-1.3.11-4U60_1cl.i386.rpm ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/7.0/SRPMS/ypserv-1.3.12-4U70_1cl.src.rpm ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/7.0/RPMS/ypserv-1.3.12-4U70_1cl.i386.rpm ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/8/SRPMS/ypserv-1.3.12-4U80_1cl.src.rpm ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br/8/RPMS/ypserv-1.3.12-4U80_1cl.i386.rpm ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS Users of Conectiva Linux version 6.0 or higher may use apt to perform upgrades of RPM packages: - add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list if it is not there yet (you may also use linuxconf to do this): rpm [cncbr] ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br 6.0/conectiva updates (replace 6.0 with the correct version number if you are not running CL6.0) - run: apt-get update - after that, execute: apt-get upgrade Detailed instructions reagarding the use of apt and upgrade examples can be found at http://distro.conectiva.com.br/atualizacoes/#apt?idioma=en - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- All packages are signed with Conectiva's GPG key.
