I'll add some mention that cookie is supposed to be a user-provided
"black box" value (could be a pointer, if need be), that's completely
up to user. It is conceptually similar to bpf_cookie in the sense that
it's user-provided value used later in user callback (or BPF program,
if it's BPF cookie).

Keep in mind also that this API isn't something that will be used by
"casual" users, it's intended for more advanced users: BPF library
writers, perf doing custom stuff, etc.

As for why long vs void *. With hashmap I found that using `void *` is
quite inconvenient in practice with a lot of extra casting, so I'm
convinced that long is a better type for "something that could be an
integer or a pointer".
