I think it would be worth a comment here to explain why you go to so much effort to add the case that uses LR here. Because the out of line stub itself could pretty well have the same calling convention as the original mcount. Actually that's a thought too. Could you split this patch in two? First just the patch to add the out of line call but use the same calling convention as mprofile-kernel. Second which changes it to use the balanced call/return.
