Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, Secretary Deb Haaland to Hold Virtual National Park Week Event Commemorating Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program
Announcement of 16 new listings in UGRR network will highlight freedom seekers
WASHINGTON – Second Gentleman of the United States Douglas Emhoff and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland will hold a virtual event on Friday April 23, 2021, to announce 16 new listings on the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network (UGRR) to Freedom Program. The new listings join more than 670 sites in 39 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands already in the Network, each of which provides insight into the diverse experiences of freedom seekers who bravely escaped slavery.
This comes as Interior caps National Park Week, an annual weeklong celebration of America’s national parks which encourages the public to explore the vast network of our national parks, sacred sites, and historical landmarks, as well as our shared heritage contained within them.
