The Bureau of Land Management is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers and National Trails Acts. Take a journey through Montana’s Upper Missouri Rivers Breaks, where the Lewis and Clark and Nez Perce National Historic Trails follow the Upper Missouri River Wild and Scenic River. Want to Camp at Joshua Tree National Park but Don’t Have a Reservation?

Consider dispersed camping on BLM-managed public lands outside the park. This site, located on the south side of Joshua Tree off I-10 provides access to Joshua Tree and the Mecca Hills Wilderness. In fact, you might want to consider exploring slot canyons and washes of Mecca Hills! You'll still need to plan ahead - dispersed camping on BLM land means there aren't any facilities (like bathrooms or picnic tables), so bring extra water, sunscreen and please remember, if you pack it in, pack it out. Openings for Campground Hosts in Northwest California

Outdoor enthusiasts have the opportunity to live and work in a beautiful northern California outdoor settings, in volunteer camp host positions offered by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM needs campground hosts at Douglas City, Steel Bridge and Junction City campgrounds along the Trinity River, west of Redding. The camping season runs from May to November. (BLM news release)

BLM Eagle Lake Field Office Completes Improvements at OHV Recreation Areas

Just in time for the spring riding season, the Bureau of Land Management Eagle Lake Field Office has completed the latest in a series of improvements at off-highway vehicle recreation areas in northeast California and far northwest Nevada. Crews have installed new vault toilets at the Fort Sage, Dry Valley and Rice Canyon recreation sites, adding to new amenities, including picnic sites, informational kiosks, and improved loading and unloading areas at each of the recreation sites. The BLM used last year’s grant funds from California State Parks Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division and federal funds to complete the latest round of improvements. (BLM news release)

Availability of Draft Supplemental Environmental Analysis for the West Mojave Route Network Project

The Bureau of Land Management has made available for public review a draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and draft Land Use Plan Amendment that aim to manage dispersed recreation visitation over an extensive area in the Mojave Desert. The draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement evaluates existing routes in the planning area and proposes a comprehensive route network that balances access with the protection of sensitive resources. In honor of National Puppy Day, DOI is spotlighting the work of Interior’s favorite four-legged friends. From pulling sleds to K-9 detecting, dogs help Interior accomplish its mission and are essential to keeping Indian country, public lands, visitors and wildlife safe. Interior Announces Results of Gulf of Mexico Region-Wide Oil and Gas Lease

In support of President Donald J. Trump's America-First Offshore Energy Strategy, Interior Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Joe Balash announced that region-wide Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 250 generated $124,763,581 in high bids for 148 tracts covering 815,403 acres in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 33 companies participated in the lease sale, submitting $139,122,383 in bids. (DOI news release)

Secretary Zinke Announces More Than $1.1 Billion for Sportsmen and Conservation

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke traveled to Horicon, Wisconsin, where he announced more than $1.1 billion in annual national funding for state wildlife agencies from revenues generated by the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration (PRDJ) acts. The Secretary presented a ceremonial check to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for $34,966,603 while visiting the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area. State-by-state listings of the final Fiscal Year 2018 apportionments of Wildlife Restoration Program fund can be found here and the Sport Fish Restoration Program fund here. Allocations of the funds are authorized by Congress. To date, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has distributed more than $20.2 billion in apportionments for state conservation and recreation projects. (DOI news release)

March 24, April 8, 14, 29, May 5, 20 and June 3: BLM, Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve Offer Spring Outings

The Bureau of Land Management and Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve will offer free public outings ranging from bird watching to traditional uses of native plants, on weekends from late March until June. The events are free. (BLM news release)

March 30: Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center Spring Schedule

The visitor center is open Wednesday through Monday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The visitor center will remain closed on Tuesdays. This visitor center schedule will be in effect through April 14. The following is a sampling of activities scheduled during March at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. (BLM news release)

April 3: BLM Schedules Public Scoping Meeting on Crimson Solar Project

The Bureau of Land Management, Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office, has scheduled a public scoping meeting for the proposed Crimson Solar Project in eastern Riverside County on  April 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the BLM Palm Springs South Coast Field Office, 1201 Bird Center Dr, Palm Springs, CA 92262. April 6-8: Limited Access at Dry Valley OHV Area During Hare Scrambles Race

Weekend back country explorers planning to visit the Dry Valley area east of Susanville the weekend of April 7-8 will encounter more people than usual, as a two-day Diamondback Hare Scrambles’ motorcycle race is scheduled on public land. Competitors will begin arriving Friday, April 6. (BLM news release)

April 7-8: Wild Horses, Burros Available for Adoption in King City

Wild horses and burros from western public rangelands will be available for public adoption, Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8, at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, 625 Division St., in King City. The Bureau of Land Management will offer 15 wild horses, all under 5-years-old, 10 gelding burros and 10 female burros. Anyone interested can preview the animals from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 6, and from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday, April 7. An auction begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with bid prices starting at $125 per animal. Horses and burros not taken during the auction will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday. The adoption fee is $125. (BLM news release)

April 14: Fishing at Bass Pond

Join California Department of Fish and Wildlife and BLM's Redding Field Office at Bass Pond in the Sacramento River Bend Outstanding Natural Area off Bend Ferry Road near Bend, California. The pond will be stocked with trout and volunteers will be available to help with questions about fishing. Free bait and limited loaner tackle will also be available. Registration will go from 8:45 am to 2:30 pm and fishing from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Participants must be 16 years or younger and able to hold a rod and reel. WILDLIFE QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWER
Rains are causing a lot of California tiger salamander movement at Fort Ord National Monument. This salamander was moved to safety off a trail near West Machine Gun Flats. Researchers have seen as many as 40 moving to ponds at night during spring rains.
