Nearly 60 million more water-starved trees are teetering. The dead and distressed woodlands represent a small fraction of the state’s billions of trees. But the problem is acute because large concentrations of trees—hundreds of acres of forest—are being wiped out. And experts expect the situation to worsen. A Black Oystercatcher is a black seabird that catches and eats, wait for it… oysters (and other mollusks). The sea pen is species of marine animal (Cnidaria). They are not an ocean writing tool. The silver fish is not a fish, but a bug. The peacock mantis shrimp is not a peacock, not a mantis, not a shrimp but rather a crustaceans. The carrot beaked bird, the Black Oystercatcher, is dependent upon the untrammeled off-shore rocks and tide pools for breeding and foraging sites. Tidepooling – for interesting sea stars, crabs, limpets, and green anemones – is a favorite past time for Californians and a destination for visitors from around the world. We share this bird’s habitat for our health, play, work, discovery, and enjoyment. Please do not disturb or take tidepool organisms as they are an important part of the home of seals, sea lions, birds, and many wildlife species that use these rocks. Along its 1,100 mile length, the California Coastal National Monument is a spectacular interplay of land and sea that reinforces the lasting connections between ourselves and nature.
