ANSWER: Giant desert hairy scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis). This scorpion has evolved with a chemical in its exoskeleton (outer shell) which causes it to glow bright blue-green under an ultraviolet light. It is the largest scorpion in North America, growing up to six inches in length and covered with fine hairs that detect both ground and air vibrations -- helping the scorpion find its prey. Their lobster-like pincers and stinger will finish off insects, spiders or small lizards. http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=0&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,1xn0n,3xn3,4kr9,jxif,1bct,ijo3 RELATED: Junior Explorer Night Hunt in the Algodones Dunes Wilderness (BLM Facebook) In search of a nocturnal arachnid, junior explorers and their families followed BLM park rangers into the dark North Algodones Dunes Wilderness over Memorial Day Weekend. http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=0&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,1xn0n,3xn3,gfyo,8egk,1bct,ijo3 -------------------- News.bytes published by Bureau of Land Management California State Office 2800 Cottage Way, Suite W-1834 Sacramento, Ca 95825 (916) 978-4600 http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=0&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,1xn0n,3xn3,4h2h,jgx0,1bct,ijo3 We appreciate feedback.
