      Painted Ladies Migrating Through the Desert

      October is the peak time for the south bound migration of painted lady butterflies. The BLM's Ridgecrest Field Office has a number of recovering wildfire areas, now dense with blooming rabbitbrush and Senecio, where you can watch painted ladies sip nectar from blossoms.

        Federal wildlife officials on Friday proposed to list as threatened populations of greater sage grouse in Nevada and California in an effort to save the struggling species, a decision that promises to pose new challenges for ranching and energy development in the West.
