Well, Karen-and-All, after you begin a graphical session, at least here in 
Debian, I can hit an alt+f12 as an example, if I ran graphical on console 12, I 
can then type an alt+f1 or any other console to resume working in console. I 
have 24 consoles, but I suppose you can have more? Certainly in graphical you 
can probably type an alt+tab to change windows.
