NVDA, though it does now run in Wine, is not compatible with any other
part of the Linux desktop, making it usable only for some Wine
applications. Your best bet is to try to get Orca running, which
shouldn't cause too many issues for you. You need Orca of course, along
with speech-dispatcher and a working speech synthesizer, espeak is
usually the default, and is most likely to work out of the box; you can
of course change your speech later once you get Orca speaking.
