I use xfce4 and have run into this. You need to do the following

1. run only your desktop and orca.

2 go into session and startup.

3. save the current session and set that as the session default.

That's what I'm usiing, albeit with a bit of hackery to get Super_L to open up the Whisker menu on my Arch system

What I ment by stopping it saving sessions was, I told it not to save my session, yet it still saves and restores things I thought I' closed when I log back in. Doesn't matter if I do logout, shutdown, etc. It seems to save the session and go from there.

If you can find it, there's a whisker box menu in xfce and use of that
menu can open up lots of functionality for screen reader users.

Last I knew, XFCE's panel and notification daemon didn't like Orca very much. I seem to recall the alt+tab application switcher also not speaking. Many people have had good luck with the desktop and file manager though, and most of the standard applications work out of the box, since they're GTK-based. I never found a work-around for the issues, so I pretty much stopped working with XFCE, but if someone did find a way around that, I'd be happy to know of
it.
