I would personally also recommend giving Slint a go for the same reasons
as before mentioned, and also because I've never had a system before
this I couldn't break to the point where I couldn't repare it myself.
Slint is according to my experience almost unbreakable.

Well, I did that:
downloaded ubuntu-20.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso
and (for flashing it to the thumb drive) balenaEtcher-Portable-1.7.3.exe
made a bootable thumb drive and installed ubuntu on it.
Now I need to learn how to install ubuntu from the thumb drive. I must
search for instructions to go on from here.
