To clarify a few things: 1. I downloaded(via ctorrent and burned the following file: debian-9.5.0-amd64-xfce-CD-1.iso 2. When I got to the install additional software step, I did not select to install any of the half dozen or so desktop environments offered. When I tried running nmtui and wicd on the machine with the connection issues, I found that neither was installed.
