Well Brian, first thing I would do would be to run a
ps -x
and look over the list of running processes. Certainly examine that
list-and-either figure out which extra items are bogging things down, or kill
some of those items. Also, if your system is in an odd state, you could
try-and-run an
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You could probably jump to version 17.10 if not the newest.
