I haven't seen this discussion but I doubt very much there's been a lot of flaiming going on. I don't know the BRLTTY developer, but Joanie, the Orca developer, is always tactful, and I've never even seen her come close to flaiming anyone. I'd be more than surprised if she ever engaged in a flame war.

Hammering is never a good thing to do.  To me it just seems that the
issues have just not been discussed with both parties together.  A mere
discussion with both mailing lists in Cc would be enough.

Sure, but that's to be expected when discussing only with one side at a
time.
