Okay, ShlomiFish was correct concerning those problem files. After deleting .cpan and .cpanplus then searching for those files again I deleted about four instances from the perl_core directory tree then reinstalled perl. Now perldoc works correctly.

I'm thinking my shortest way to clear this mess out will be to delete the entire cpan tree under my home directory. I'm curious to find out if that will fix anything at all.
