Removing Speakup should be as simple as something like sudo rmmod speakup speakup_<synth> where synth refers to the specific synthesizer you're using. Unfortunately, this gives errors stating that speakup is in use and that the synthesizer module is in use by speakup. So to fix this, I did sudo rmmod -f speakup speakup_<synth> and Speakup was forceably removed from the kernel and all standard keyboard functionality was restored. Hope this helps.
