Certain programs use ncurses. I don't think this is your problem however.
I use a versabrailler for a terminal. it is a dumb terminal--no emulation. the escape codes for terminal control appear on my display; it is annoying.
I'm not very strong on this but I think you should be able to make these go away if you change your terminal type.
