the problem is that most of the laptops produced these days don't have a serial port. you can use a USB to serial converter to get the desired output, but that requires an additional driver and other support. SOme Operating systems generally won't support this on boot up (openBSD is an example of this). There are still some desktop units produced that have a serial port, but these are starting to become the exception and not the rule. Hell, even my Braille sense U2 doesn't come equipped with a serial port.
