OK, following up on Chriss's suggestion of gpodder, I did an
apt-get install gpodder?/sid
it was much more successful than I was manually. Reading its man-page it says "gpo" is the commandline version. So I went in an gpo interactive shell, looking to subscribe, here's what happens: gpo> subscribe https://gpodder.net/podcast/quadriga-the-international-talk-show-1/subscribe 1375550603.258432 [__main__] WARNING: Cannot subscribe: WifiLogin: https://gpodder.net/login/?next=/podcast/quadriga-the-international-talk-show-1/subscribe

gpo>
Back again live, for some reason gpodder requires a login? I also see nothing in its short manual about naming conventions? But still, thanks, this may be progress.
