In order to use slackware at all, I had to start by using the speakup.s driver and a doubletalk lt synthesizer. I got espeak and portaudio and espeakup installed on this system. What I don't yet know how to do is the command that will create /dev/softsynth for me and then set me up so I can adjust lilo.conf to use softsynth for output.
