I'm thinking that Wheezy is using a new enough version of GNOME that
alt-f1 is bringing up an overview screen instead of the main menu. You
can press alt-control-tab from there to get to your applications, window
list, etc., or you can simply start typing the name of the application
you want, and it will pop up as a button, along with other suggested
applications that fit your search. Just arrow to the button and press
space or enter on it, just like any other button. GNOME Shell will take
a little getting used to, but I picked it up fairly quickly.
