Are you able to add files to the drive at all? Are you able to delete 
anything not in trash? If so, then you should be able to remove the 
trash with root privileges. If you are unable to add or delete files in 
any other folder, and if the drive is mounted read-only automatically, 
then your file system is probably damaged, and you will need to run fsck 
to try to clean it.
