Help with network issue

I am using Ubuntu.  I have noticed lately that my firefox comes up with 
offline automatically checked and evolution says it is not connected to 
the network.  Alpine works fine at the command line and firefox works as 
soon as I tell it not to be ofline but I can't get evolution to come 
online.  Can anyone tell me where to look to find why gnome would think my 
computer should be offline?
