The answer is telnet. You can play over telnet at freechess.org or
chess.net. I have no experience with the latter, and only a little with
the former. However, it's clear that one can play with a particular
individual, or choose to accept a challenge from just anyone. And, if
you register, you can save your game and resume it later.
