Better to run slapt-get since it excludes kernel upgrades by default.
That means kernels do not get replaced unless specific instructions get

do not run slackpkg because it appears it will replace speakup.s with the
wrong upgrade kernel. I have a message into slackware on this problem now
and will update as I learn more.
