I tried this as an experiment. I don't have an embosser but I was
curious what the .brf file would look like. ImageMagick crashed with a
segfault. I think it was the Debian Lenny version. Has this been fixed?

You can translate a picture into braille by using imagemagick's convert:
convert mypicture.jpg mypicture.brf
and then emboss it.
