Plug the headphones in and unplug the speakers or turn them off or lower
their volume. Should be controls on one of those speakers.

synthesizer with ORCA. (I work in an office and the laptop has a daft

I'm using Ubuntu hardy.
I had a quick look on the ORCA FAQ but couldn't see anything about this.
