The linuxspeakup.org page offers socrates under its projects heading. That may working with the scanner a little easier too.

No, it's spelled Ocropus. However, Ocropus does no OCR itself but id
does layout analyses and prepares a scanned image for other OCR
applications. Currently Tesseract is supported. BTW: Tesseract is a very
promising OCR software.
