Speed Test in Linux?

I am surprised this is as much as a chalenge, but I noticed when running ncftp from shellworld, that my speed was around 60 instead of its usual 200. So some1 in our Linux group had us install iperf. The results didn't make sense to me, so I heard that I could go to
www.gorge.net/speed
They even have a link for non-java, but it also is a jumble of random items.
When I go to whatismyip.com the speed test requires javascript. Are their any console tools which I can check my DSL speed?
Thanks in advance
Hart
