Hi Martin,
It is u b u n t u and it works well.
Speakup as you might know, has had some work done to it lately.
As far as I am aware, there currently is no pre-built ubuntu kernel 
containing speakup, but there are packages available.
There were some problems with the latest Ubuntu using pulsaudio which 
caused some issues with speech, but the previous version works well.
The version I have on my Del laptop is 7.10.
There is also a variant of ubuntu called xubuntu, which is geared to 
smaller machines.
	I have that running on a small 500 mhz machine with speakup and 
espeak talking fine.
