I tried that, it didn't work.
I was able to get into root with sudo su, but I don't know much about using
the command line yet.
any other suggestions? And thanks for your help.

The normal ubuntu default is not to have an administrator account. Why
not try sudo -i <cr> as a user and when it asks you for your password key
in the password you used to login to the machine as the user. That may
get you a little more control.
