re packet sniffing - This is true.  However if you're only pulling mail from 
your ISP's mail server, the only machines your packets will be going through 
will belong to your ISP, and anyone in a position to sniff your packets on 
those boxes will probably have more straight-forward access to your mail 
anyway.

Yes, fetchmail.  Put a line like daemon 300 above your first poll line in
.fetchmailrc in your home directory. ssl probably goes on a line by itself
after the poll line and before your options line.  Many providers don't
set up ssl which leaves email readable to anyone with a packet sniffer.
