Re: playing soundfiles

I use esound/esd -- the enlightened sound daemon -- to play multiple streams at once. Not every program has support for it but mplayer does.

mplayer -ao esd file

Here is the main site:
http://www.tux.org/~ricdude/EsounD.html
(the news is old, but my version 0.2.36 does what it needs to)
and here is a technical description of it:
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/whitepapers/esd/

I might be old fashioned however. Should I be using alsa/dmix nowadays? I am running a 2.6.17 kernel with functioning alsa.
