Thanks for a good article. What exactly are we up against with the open documents? Are they similar to PDF which covers a huge range of possibilities. Some PDF's are nothing more than image scans of a printed page while others have actual searchable text embedded in the document and can be read with programs like pstotext. The catdoc application reads many Microsoft Word files and mplayer makes us able to listen to streaming audio most of the time.
