Hi Andor,
Thanks a bunch for you answer.
I'll wait with further updates till I have a simelar system ready.
Any way I need a a server for backup purposes, so I gotta do it sooner or later.

Best regards
Brian

in general php is very nice and far backwards-compatible
However, sometiems some functions get depricated and ultimately may be
removed as well.
Also, with a new installastion some security-settings might change asw ell
(i.e. registred_globals)

In general linux has a good record of backwards-compatibility as far as
I've seen it over the last 7.5 years or so.
But the odd thing might always happen.
If you want to be sure you have to check the changelogs of the
applications before installing them.

As I'm a debian-user I dunno if this is possible, but always see what the
upgrade is going to change install new/upgrade or posssibly remove.
Specially if you are running on-the-edge unstable versions of your distro.

If the server is that critical to you, install a second identical system
(identical as in software) and upgrade that one first.
Then check if everything works okay before upgrading the time-critical
system.

kind regards,
Andor
